Lois & Clark was a great Superman show in the 90s.
In my opinion, much better and fun than the over-brooding and seriousness-overload of Smallville.

Here's one of my all-time favorite scenes from this great show.
Little background here: Lois & Clark were asked to Perry White's office. To discuss "that thing".
Both think the chief knows about the whole Clark/Kal-El situation while Perry is talking about some secret reportage he thinks they're doing...

Christopher Reeves might be my favorite Clark Kent/Superman of all time, but Lane Smith will always be the perfect Perry White in my eyes!

Gamin' NEWS! NeverDead's Launch Trailer

Here's something fun!

It's the launch trailer for an original new title from Konami! (for a change :P)
NeverDead is an upcoming beat 'em all developed by Rebellion Developments.

If you've been missing stuff/never heard of this one before:
The fun part is that you play as a cursed immortal protagonist! That means you'll be able to lose body parts/regrow them or even play with some limbs. (like, just the head rolling on the floor)
This will provide some unique occasions for the puzzles in this game.
Our hero will also have a female sidekick to assist him, and vice-versa. You see, she's not immortal like our dude, so you'll have to protect her from taking any damage! (what a gentleman the guy is...)

This is a cover I did for yet another Honk Kong pirate game, for a cartmodd of Super Bubble Bobble!

This is without a doubt the most professional and closest to an actual official game pirate title I've ever seen!
Perfect port of the classic arcade game. Great improvement over the Master System one.
Great tunes, great controls..
The only thing that jumps to your eyes to remind you this was a pirate title is the random inclusion of both Shinchan & Doraemon! (yeah, I know...how random!)

FanMade - Zelda: The Lost Oracle Trailer

What if there actually was a full fledged sequel to Zelda: Wind Waker?
Not one of those portable Zelda titles, a big new entry on modern systems?

This Canadian animator Joel Furtado decided to go ahead, and make his own trailer for such a title:

I gotta say this is really impressive. Love the atmosphere he recreated here.
The visuals/graphics look amazing!

I might have missed the last couple modern Zelda entries - Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, all the portable titles since the Oracle of ones on the GBA - but I would totally buy this in an instant!

Gamin' NEWS! In space, no one can hear a game being delayed

Here's something I forgot to post on the blog last week.

Remember that Aliens Colonial Marines game from Gearbox Software?
Yeah, that very same one that kept being delayed since the early 2000s? It's back on!
Sega announced it had been delayed now to this Autumn 2012.No more precisions regarding the month though.

It will available on HD systems and PC. And a rumor has it on Nintendo's upcoming Wii U as well.

I mean after the way Gearbox butchered Duke Nukem Forever, I don't know if I have much faith in them anymore...

Man, I gotta admit it to you... I actually liked this show.
Even if the "Heart" power got me into endless discussions about how such power could exist/how could it work, if he got the lesser power of the bunch or the most powerful weapon...

Anyways, I still find the Ending Credits variation of theme quite a lot!

This one is quite well burned forever on my mind (and many others), because it features a lovely Rachael Leigh Cook (Josie & the Pussycats, Get Carter, Batman Beyond, She's All That,..) going crazy on a poor and innocent kitchen.

I still find her pretty gorgeous in this one to this very day~ <3

Gamin' NEWS! Pac Man Vs. Mega Man!! It's on!!!

Here's the most epic news you'll heard concerning the upcoming Capcom title Street Fighter X Tekken...
...joining an already big epic cast of colorful characters of Namco and Capcom fighters (for some reason, mostly Final Fight on Capcom's side...!?), Ono added two surprise non-fighting guest to the roster in the form of....

Namco's own classic mascot Pac-Man will be joining the all-star ranks of Tekken fighters.

Like today's Namco company this bonus character will actually be a classic Pacman riding Tekken's own Mokujin (albeit giant). The perfect alliance of today's games and the classic Namco from the arcades. Namco today, still with their classic and modern fanbase in mind.

On the other hand, Capcom's own bonus character is...

Classic "Boxart Mega Man".
Which would be a nice addition usually...but look at the poor guy!

He's clearly out of shape, the costume totally busted...
Is that what they think the fans deserve? How they see the Mega Man fanboys?
Or better, just a joke? Considering how much fans were asking for some Mega Man content lately be it in the fighting games or just considering the way they threat Mega Man over the more popular franchises like Resident Evil or Street Fighter.
With 2 Mega Man games canceled lately, Mega Man Universe and Mega Man Legends 3, this is probably what Ono thinks of the blue bomber:

Honestly, I kinda love it!
I'm sure the Japanese audience will call him "USA Rockman" or sumthin'~

And you can be sure a more Classic Mega Man will be available as a DLC costume later on XD

how are ya doin'?

I've been posting fanfilms on this blog for quite some time...and I see I haven't mentioned nor posted this great 2003 fanfilm yet... Surely most of you probably already know it, but anyways why shouldn't I give it a post here for once?

Here's Batman: Dead End!
Known colloquially on the interwebz as that "Batman Vs. Predator (Vs. Aliens)" fanfilm, it is rather a more professional take than the myriad usual fanmade videos.
And for a reason!~

Batman: Dead End was directed by Sandy Collora. It original aired at the San Diego Comic-Con on July 2003, and shortly after being released on TheForce.net made a big splash amongst fanboys and nerds alike all over the world.

It's about Batman chasing an escaped Joker into a dark alley....when suddenly a random Alien attack them both!
And it gets work when a Predator appears out of nowhere and a duel erupts between the Dark Knight and the Space Hunter....

This "little" movie was done with a budget of around 30'000$ by designer artist Sandy Collora.
He worked for years at Stan Winston Studios and was part of such classic films as Jurassic Park, Men In Black or even Predator 2. He designed various Predators for this flick's cult classic epic ending, many Preds which never made it into the actual movie (including this female egyptian-inspired Pred on the left).

Others more elaborated costume made it into this Batman: Dead End movie though, like that big red-masked Predator leader at the end.

He made another similar fanfilm in 2004 with World's Finest, using most of the same cast and crew. It was this time a Superman/Batman crossover.

Collora made his first debut film feature with Hunter Prey recently.

I loved this "Dead End" project! Loved it first ~6-7 years ago when I first saw it, and still adore it to this day.
Very great pacing, great use of each characters' own movie soundtrack, great angles... I mean even the fight looks better choreographed than most recent action movie scenes!!
(at least you understand what's going on here unlike any of Michael Bay's flicks...)

Kevin Smith himself said this was "possibly the truest, best Batman movie ever made"
And Alex Ross added "Batman the way I've always wanted to see him" which doesn't come as a surprise, I mean just look at him, clearly based on Ross artwork :P

Gamin' NEWS! One Piece: Luffy's Rage

The guys behind most of the current Dynasty Warriors games at Koei, who made those ol' Berserk beat'em all games (like Sword of the Berserk: Gut's Rage on the Dreamcast), and the recent beat'em all adaptation of Hokuto No Ken running on the same DW engine (Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage) will adapt yet another manga/anime series into a beat'em all title!

They seem to do these spinoffs running on the same engine from time to time.
Sometimes generic non-Dynasty Warriors games (like Warriors: Legends of Troy, or Bladestorm: The Hundred Years' War based on the 100 Years' War), other times anime-based titles.

This time it's One Piece's turn!

One Piece: Pirate Musou is the Japanese title of this game they will make for Namco Bandai this time around.

It looks like mindless fun!
I guess that's one One Piece game I might give a try! (like Dragon Ball, there's been dozen of those...)
Like fans noticed, it seems it will adapt some recent story arcs (as Berserk Millennium Falcon Arc: Chapter of the Holy Demon War did on the PS2), instead of a big recap (like Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage) or an original story (like Sword of the Berserk: Gut's Rage ).

I'm guessing the title will be changed outside Japan, like Hokuto Musou became Ken's Rage.

Comics NEWS! Marvel's "Avengers Art Appreciation" month

Remember DC's Iconic month last year? Here's Marvel turn to reveal a thematic month. (though honestly, they do that a lot...)

Marvel Comics will be having lots of variant covers showcasing the Avengers in different artistic styles.
I usually don't like variant covers much... I think they drown the comic book market in an unnecessary over-saturation of books and I'd prefer these covers were related to the content of the books. (I mean why an Avengers variant for, say, the Fantastic Four? why? just to sell some more issues to people that weren't gonna buy that book in the first pace? so commercial... anyways..)

They'll be either representations of the Avengers under different artists own personal styles or through Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Monet-like interpretations.
A sort of depiction of what the Avengers would have looked like "throughout the ages".

Ubisoft just released another trailer for I Am Alive which will be released on March 7;

Running on the LEAD engine (Assassin's Creed's Anvil Engine, modified for Splinter Cell: Conviction).
A post-apocalyptic survival horror, you play as the role of this guy who's in search of his wife and daughter.
Survival skills, various tests to prove yourself in this dangerous environment..
This looks like something that could be fun in the end.

It seems Ubi re-recanceled the retail release. (though I'd say, expect one later on in any case)

CBR Adam Strange: Planet Heist

Such a seriously underused but fun and original character!

You saw him in his first modern, if more serious, mini-series:

And kicking ass in pure pulp retro fashion in:
- DC Comics Presents: Mystery in Space
Finally, in the 2000s, DC gave him his long overdue modern re-interpretation, an all-new story and sequel of sorts to Man of Two Worlds!

Format: Trade paperback, collects the 8-issue miniseries epic.

Every now and then, people at DC try to bring Adam Strange back from the drawers.
Sadly, not much is done with such a great character.
Why is that? I mean really?
The character is bright, simple, iconic. The concept is fantastic.

You see,
Adam Strange's sort of like DC Comics' very own Indiana Jones.
Strange is an average guy.
Originally an archeologist (why does all these sort of cool stuff keep happening to these guys??), he was suddenly hit by a Zeta beam one day, which transported him away to the very strange planet Rann...

Adam Strange's just your average Joe. Only he's having the worst day of his life.

On Rann, Strange discovered himself to be a true hero at heart. Equipped with a laser gun and a jet pack, Adam Strange proved himself several times to be quite a reliable savior to the distant planet.
After various uncontrollable travels back and forth, Adam finally settled there and married Alanna, the daughter of the chief scientist, Sardath, who whisked him away originally.
They had a child, Aleea.

After one quick line-throwaway to the previous series, Adam was finally ready to leave Earth once and for all.
Adam was just about to join his wife and daughter on his adopted homeworld forever with his all-new perfected Zeta beam when suddenly... his transport never came!

He finds himself trapped on Earth...
What has happened to his world? And more important, is his family okay?

Planet Heist is exactly what fans of Adam Strange wished for years.

One massive epic science-fiction story, setting up Adam's place in the larger DCU (where the anterior Man of Two Worlds was clearly isolated from everything and self-contained).

It is simply that, a big scifi epic, bringing Strange into all sorts of places, across all corners of the DC universe.

Adam Strange is quickly confronted with intergalactic bounty hunters, then goes on to explore Rann's solar system, which brings him against Thanagarians, and specially in the clutches of wing commander and fanatic Sh'ri Valkyr. Later on, Strange runs into Tigorr and his Omega Men who decide to help him out find what really happened to Rann and the Polaris star system.
In the end, Strange finds himself a man on the run. Darkstars (sort of unofficial Green Lantern Corps), the Legion...every body wants to arrest Strange for a crime he didn't commit...

It's big.
It goes into all sorts of directions.
The story all fans of Adam Strange always dreamed of!

Andy Diggle depicts one heckuva adventure for Adam Strange.

It quickly mentions previous plot left unresolved.
Alanna originally "died" giving birth to Aleea... Which was later expanded upon in the pages of the JLA (in a little story arc, starting issue #20). Alanna turned out to actually be alive, with a big baddie planning his revenge on our heroes...
In the end, Alanna was reunited with husband and daughter.

The artwork is gorgeous. Easily one of the best I've seen in a while. Fitting for this big colorful space adventure.
Blasters look great, jet packs almost come to life in mention, alien creatures are exotic and strange.

My only complaint (more on that, below!) is that the threat of this evil "Starbreaker" kinda comes cheap and ends abruptly in the end, with this story leading into another one...

Overall, it's a fantastic read!
Fun, gorgeous. This Mystery In Space is one Strange Adventure for sure!
(both of these classic Adam Strange comics names could have been just as good titles and more fitting over Planet Heist)

It's a great revival of the space adventure genre in the DCU.
It reinvigorated Adam Strange.
It also redesigns his costume. Good bye good ol' classic red jumpsuit...and hello modern techno-hitech futuristic red jumpsuit. Purists will hate it, newcomers will love it.
I personally think the book would have been just a good with the old retro pulp outfit.

It works great as an introduction to the large space-aspect of the DC Universe.

My only problem, but it is a tiny one in the end, is that it all leads up to...
THE RANN-THANAGAR WAR!!

Anyway, in itself, it still a pretty good read and an excellent tale for science fiction fans, Adam Strange fans and readers in the search of something different from your usual "urban spandex wearing crime-fighting supermen".

I give it:

Gamin' NEWS! Resident Evil 6 announced

So it is finally official!
Capcom has finally announced Resident Evil 6, released a trailer for it and given a release date.

RE6 is coming up at the end of the year, on November 20.
It will feature a return to basis with a more urban environment (hooray!), more classic elements/story/character and the return of RE1's Chris Redfield and RE2's Leon S. Kennedy.

And here's the trailer!

This is looking pretty great so far!

Still using the RE4/5 3rd person over the shoulder. It was obvious they would continue to follow that route ()though part of me which they coulda found a compromise, like Ubisoft's Cold Fear)

I also see the artstyle is a bit more realistic, so Chris doesn't look as over-the-top/gigantic/super-muscular as he was in RE5.

It has been ten years since the Raccoon City incident and the President of the United States has decided to reveal the truth behind what took place in the belief that it will curb the current resurgence in bioterrorist activity. Due to be by the President’s side is his personal friend and Raccoon City survivor, Leon S. Comics' NEWS! DC changes logo

The rumour was going on for a while, but now it is official with Warner Bros. recent new Press Release out!

DC Comics/DC Entertainment will be changing logo now, finally!
(I don't know for you, but had been a bit more logical right from the start of this "New 52" new direction 'n' all...)

The Comics Alliance takes a look at the history of the DC logo.
Now, I dunno for you, but I always found redundant to have the "comics" written below DC.
You know, with DC already meaning "Detective Comics". (Detective Comics Comics? really??)

DC, unlike Marvel, changed its logo quite a lot over the time.
The 1976's one is by far my favorite, the DC Bullet. They kept the DC Bullet for over 20 years, it is quite iconic and in fact a revised classic logo that evolved over all these years.
Now DC will be leaving the modern blue one all of sudden.

It is simply the most corporate logo I've ever seen for comics so far.
Lifeless, dull.
Don't get me wrong, it is all quite "modern" and design. But like the comics' own titles, it is too obviously designed by some random graphic designers and has no relation to the material on which it will be published on.

But the above picture was a bit generic and it is hard to have an idea on how this will look like for real.

So here's more!

The logos will actually be tuned to better represent the character(s)/family title/and genres it will represent.
It will actually look like the following just released variations:

You can already guess how they'll be used.
Either depending on the color/look of the actual covers, or in relation to the brand.
See in the first pic above the Bat-family titles' logo (top left corner), the Supes-family one (top right), the Green Lantern one, etc..
And was is the bottom left corner one on the first pic? Is that the Watchmen logo?? What will it be used for? "The Edge" books? The more indie/non-superhero books? It seems to confirm to me the return of more Watchmen material as fans feared...

DC is also giving us a look how it will look like on actual covers of issues or trade paperbacks:

Why all this, I ask you?
Why changing everything? This looks something that was forced upon DC from the higher-ups...
Well, for the digital age of medias! Of course!

This modern soulless logo is solely to better represent DC on digital apps and itunes stores and whatnot!

See how natural it looks this way?

I'd have honestly preferred they went the retro route, highly marketable as well nowadays, using the nostalgia to sell products.

At the end of the day... well DC's is a company, and a subsidiary of Warner Bros. at that!

Though, the new logo...

So bland....even worse now... this is why I dislike that companies (like DC in this case) nowadays prefer to use external graphic designers who will produce such sterile and unrelated logos for products..rather than having people on board, co-working with the guys creating the comics.

In this case, people working on the comics, making their own logo.

I already had the same problem with these New 52 series' logo...but now the DC logo follows the same pattern of "hi-tech design modern logo", and even worse, looks completely unrelated to the material. There's no synchronization or harmony between the books/cover art/content and and the series' logo or the DC ones...

(ps: Yes, I'm a graphic designer)
(ps2: yes, I can recognize graphic designers and myself included often work on our side of things, making things pleasant visually/design without thinking about a correlation, a link if you will among product and representation/logo)

And you know what, in the end there's only thing you can know for sure.... They'll change it again.

On the plus side: we'll get another one someday.
At the worst scenario: we'll be stuck with this for the next 29 years...

Update: Heck, even one of DC's artists, Greg Capullo, dislikes it! He and his wife :P

But they might change it sooner if they got some legal troubles.

Here's an all-new fanfilm by the guys at BatmanDeathWish Channel.
A bit different from your usual fanfilms, considering the sheer number of characters, people involved and idea behind all this.

You see this is going to be an episodic Batman fanfilm.

Here's what they've released so far,

featuring the likes of Oracle, Catwoman, Harley, Nightwing, Robin, Poison Ivy, Batgirl, etc.!

It's looking pretty amazing so far!

Blog - The Evolution of Deathstroke

Here's a random blog post about Deathstroke.

Honestly though I'm not the biggest fan of Deathstroke you'll find, but I always thought he was a decent enough villain for the Teen Titans to run into whenever. Also, I preferred when he was used over well though long over-arching story-arcs rather than on his own solo title or regular Titans villain.
I mean, he's a dangerous hit-man, do we really need to have him kill people around all the time?

Anyways, let's take a look at "Slade Wilson's" design...

Originally, he had a pretty simple enough and iconic costumed from the go.
Blue costume, orange pirate boots and gloves, double-sided mask? It's simple, memorable and pretty visual.
(perhaps not "realistic", but this is comics, visual is always the foremost important aspect)

I like this look!
Memorable, visually original. The orange briefs might seem odd, but in a world where a red and blue-costumed flying alien is the world's most powerful hero, this is simply a logical design for a villain in it for his rep'.

Alright, so Deathstroke didn't change much over the years since his introduction. While other 80s-introduced character got more aggressive redesigns in the 2000s, Deathstroke stayed the same.
Simply because of that, he was iconic enough already!

So his first, principal and only redesign was in the giant What if/Elseworld crossover summer-event called "Flashpoint".
Embracing the whole kinda-pirate-y look altogether, this Deathstroke became a full fledged scurvy dog.
Still pretty recognisable. Kinda strange, but works in context and for the sole purpose of this alternate world.

So when DC had Jim Lee & co redesign the whole DC pantheon, Deathstroke got his first actual in-story new look!
Like most DCnU design, it's a return to the 90s in the aesthetic.

Tons of useless details most artists besides the cover guy won't be able to keep up with, tons of lines on the costume, new gloves/suit/boots/mask based on his previous look yet altered enough to feel different.

I thinkthis is pretty representative of the whole rebooted New 52 DC Universe.
Grittier, "more serious", more badass, more attitude, more violent..

Which brings us to today.
DC announced they would cancel ~6 books already, though replacing them with as many new titles to keep the whole "52 books in The New 52" around.
Artists and writers will shuffle around.

Rob Liefeld's Hawk & Dove is canceled already (no surprise!).
So what do they do? Give Rob 3 other titles! He will write Hawkman, write orr draw Grifter (?) and will draw & write Deathstroke now!

And the above is the way Deathstroke will be even more 90s-ified under Rob Liefeld's pen.
Seems like someone won't be following Jim Lee's designs that much, heh? :P

Goodbye details, hello giant shoulderpads and pouches!

Also, Rob said his first arc would bring Deathstroke against Lobo (huh...did ya get Lobo was a parody of the whole gritty 80s/90s comics, Rob?) in spaaaaaaaaaaaaace! Because there's less details to draw in spaaaaaaaaaaace! (that is why Hawkman will also be getting in spaaaaaaaaaaace under Liefeld, like he did with Deadpool recently as well)

Basically said, a thug get super cracked thanks to some badass steroids, only he becomes an ugly monster instead of just strong. He turns out to be pretty nice and not just a bad guy. He explodes in the end. Why?! Because the guys who made this movie tried the best they could to bring to screen one of the random bosses from a beat 'em all video game, which seems to always end up in nonsensical plots in live movies...

Deleted Scenes - That canceled Superman game

Did you know that when we got that modern well done Batman game, we almost a bunch of other (good?) DC Comics inspired videogames?

There wasn't just a Flash video game in the works.
We also almost got a Superman game as well!
Apparently, Factor 5 (Turrican, Star Wars: Rogue Leader, Rogue Squadron..) was working on a Supes game.
They closed in 2009.

But some of the pics of the game in development have recently surfaced on the website of artist Daveed Kaplan.

It seems the project was codenamed "Blue Steel".
We may not see any screens of what would have been like, but we can get a good look at Supes, with his huge S-symbol - which I love btw, but also some of the villains the game would have featured.
Like Lex Luthor, Darkseid (!!!), his son Kalibak, General Zod and Non as well!

I dunno for you, but this could have had some potential...
Was this gonna be Superman's first good game in a long while...?!

Gamin' NEWS! Street Fighter X Tekken new trailers so far

Capcom released some news regarding their take on the upcoming next cross-company Vs. Series installment Street Fighter X Tekken!

A lot of characters have been revealed so far.

Here's the latest batch of characters for the month:

Balrog, Vega, Juri join Paul, Law and Xiaoyu!
Loving to see Capcom already keeping Juri around. That's more effort they're doing than whatever happened to other SF4 newcomers like Abel, Seth or Viper....

The Tekken guys are looking well integrated and rendered in Capcom's hands.

There's also some quick hints at the upcoming characters we might see (Akuma, Ogre?)... Is that a (Miss) Pac-Man hint at the end?! And...huh... Captain Commando? Or a realistic/boxart Mega Man? (at this point, I'd rather have Cap' Commando honestly..)
But since it's in the Vita-console exclusive segment..it means fun characters only for that version of the game? awww...come on!

Okay, I admit, I haven't seen the movie to this day.
But doesn't stop me from admiring the art direction and animation of a (mostly recent) Disney movie!
A 2D one at least!

Check out this scene from Lilo & Stitch.
The art style might differ from older usual Disney flicks, but the strong sense of dynamism, choreographed scene and lively character make it work!

I really enjoy this art style too.

Warner Bros. released an all-new trailer for Grasshopper Manufacture's/James Gunn's joint effort Lollipop Chainsaw!
The game will be done in pure Grasshopper style, for both PS3 and Xbox 360. And James Gunn will take care of the plot and characters. So expect a pretty fun and violent hack & slash.
It is going to be a 3rd person action/beat 'em all game, Suda-style.

A fun over-the-top goth villain?
Loving the grindhouse tone.

Here's some little updates on upcoming games of interest.

Gosh, I sound so smart when I want to.

First of all, finally some gameplay of the upcoming new Hitman game Hitman: Absolution.

I absolutely love this series.
It kinda disappear off track, so I'm guessing most of the current gaming generations has no idea what these games are like.
Always loved the interactivity, the rich and interesting universe/gameplay of the series. Where you could plan a dozen scenarios to execute your "contracts".
This one's still developed by series creator IO Interactive. (unlike Core Design with the Tomb Raider series, another classic from Eidos)

This one's coming somewhen in 2012.

And what's more to it, there's already rumors of yet another Hitman up next coming on the shelves.

You see, since Square Enix is barely selling games these days, and since they also acquired Eidos alongside all their old franchises, they confirmed their plan to develop ten strong franchises.
And a copyright just showed up recently:

It seems another game starring Agent 47's coming, this one titled Hitman: Profession.
Probably developed either by another studio or back in intern at Square Enix.

Either way, I'm not liking much the idea.
That's like, with the upcming Max Payne 3 at Rockstar. Imagine another game coming up, this one's developed by Remedy. Which one would you be the most awaiting for? The "fake one", cash-in, developed by the publisher to make money on one of their ips, with a new direction, radical shift in the presentation and tone...or the other one coming up from the series' creators?

Jarinko Chie - TV Openings

So I reviewed the movie, here's some of the TV series I spoke off in the "Overall segment" at the end.

"(...)It was then followed by a 64-episode TV series by Tokyo Movie Shinsha. With Takahata working on it as chief director. Followed then by a sequel series of 30 episodes itself."

"Chie the Brat" was adapted into two different anime series.
The first one is a pretty good continuation of the movie (which adapts some more stories from the manga). The theme song reused the movie's main title music, the art and animation stayed pretty on par with the movie quality wise.
Then a second show was created without Takahata (who at the time was going to be part of Miyazaki's now-classic animation Studio Ghibli), this one cheaper ran for a mere year.

Sadly they have never been translated/released outside Japan, though the Japanese DVDs do contain English subtitles!

AwesomeScenes from Adam Sandler - Anger Management's "I Feel Pretty"

Before Adam Sandler starting making the boring and dull movies he starts in nowadays, he used to appear in a load of very funny comedies.
Here's a fantastic scene from one of his last good ones, Anger Management. (though some parts of the movie do drag on a bit, and the ending's a bit meh~)

In which a crazy psychiatrist Jack Nicholson tries to relax Sandler in the middle of traffic:.

Even if you dislike Adam Sandler, you cannot stay stoic while staring at Jack's expressions in this song! XD

...And here's one more entry for my Studio Ghibli Marathon reviews!

This time one of the lesser known movies, but an important one nonetheless!
Yet another movie directed by (then-future) Studio Ghibli's legendary Isao Takahata.

Did it disappear into obscurity due to its quality? Is it any good? And More importantly, what's it about?....

Movie: Jarinko Chie aka Chie the Brat in English
Directed by Isao Takahata
Release date 1981
Genre Anime/comedy
Country Japan

Jarinko Chie was originally a very popular manga series by Etsumi Haruki pre-published in the pages of the magazine Manga Action from 1978 to 1997 (!) and has been collected in the form of a series of 67 volumes.
Which, by the way, was one of the longest manga series until not that long ago.

The title roughly means "Chie the brat".
(though as you may note, my copy's called "Kié" instead of "Chié", because it's a French release and)

Isao Takahata decided to adapt this episodic manga into a full length feature with an animated studio at Toho, and Yōichi Kotabe and Yasuo Otsuka as chef animators.

It is the story of this little girl Chie, in a heart warming movie than contains both comedy and more serious elements.

Not your daddy's little girl so much, heh?

Chie is the "most unfortunate girl in Japan".
She is about 8 years old. Her parents just got separated.
By day, Chie has to go to school, study on her own and take care of the bullies from class. The rest of the day, she manages her father's own little restaurant on her own.

You see, her father Tetsu is a big goof. He spends most of his time fighting other people or spending his all of his savings on games.
That is why Chie's mom leaved him actually. Tetsu isn't a very present dad nor a very responsible adult. He doesn't take care of his daughter much and has never been able to hold a job for long.

One night while taking care of the family business, Chie helps a little stray cat that starts hanging around afterwards...

This might all sound sort of depressing and all...but it is actually a very funny story, with some very personal signature touches like what you'd expect from a Takahata movie.

More like little skits put together than anything sporting a real overarching story.
The characters, as cartoony as they faces might be, feel real. "Complete."

The art style, in the pure style of classic 4-koma mangas (comic strips), is very caricatural. Characters have huge noses, big square jaws, giant ears... It helps defines them and recognise them in a glance.
This animated movie actually mimics and captured the art style of the original manga perfectly.

Over the various little "plots", the characters develops. The dad decides to give Chie more attention, Chie opens up to her father as well and even the random thugs/yakuzas they meet got their own change of hearts with the contact with this "little brat".

Unrealistic situations and cartoony characters..but a real heart beneath it all.

The cat(s) even have their own whole side story, culminating in an epic final confrontation at the end.
They walk on two legs, talk, can kick some serious butts...and it all comes down to family ties, honor and maturity.

Chie continues to see her mother behind Tetsu's back.. She misses her and would have preferred to stay with her...
A strange turn of events give the parents a chance to become a family again...

It is a very sweet (everything turns out for the better!) yet rooted in the reality of many children. Not exclusively in Japan.
The story is set in Osaka, which is a nice change from the usual Tokyo from most of these sort of movies/animes. There's a different, friendlier and more open culture. (Tetsu's police officer friend comes to mind) Even the bad guys aren't that bad in the end..

The music composed by Shinsuke Kazato, even if simple, is nice and memorable.
The theme song is particularly catchy and comes at various points under different styles.

Overall, it is a very nice movie.
The animation didn't age that much and it's fast pace enough to feel fun and fresh today as well.

It might feel like a bunch of stories glued together, but there's some character development as well.

It is sadly very difficult to find. Your only choice might be to import a copy of the DVD.
I've only come across online the Japanese DVD (which has English subtitles anyway) and a very rare French release. (which I ended up ordering from the publisher!).

The movie was a modest but success enough.
It was then followed by a 64-episode TV series by Tokyo Movie Shinsha. With Takahata working on it as chief director. Followed then by a sequel series of 30 episodes itself.

Worth a look for Ghibli or Takahata fans!

It's time for a new rounds of gaming news!
First off,

Here's some actual gameplay of Ubisoft's post-apocalyptic survival game I Am Alive!
Lots of climbin' ahoy!

Seems pretty decent.
Of course, not fantasti-aweso-tascular-epic-HD like what most people are used to these days..but, hey! Ubisoft did cut off the budget for this title, making it digital only...so...what'd'you expect??

The guys at GiantBomb got a hold of this new PC "FPS" puzzle game, Q.U.B.E.
..and it's looking amazing so far.

Now doubt to please and occupy Portal fans (until the next one?)

On another note, there's a demo of Capcom's all-new original title (yay! Finally! a new IP!! I was getting tired of the constant rehashes over there...) Asura's Wrath!

So...what are ya waiting for? Turn on your Xbox/PS3 and go download it!

We should all try helping out an original title for a change, your usual Uncharted/Gears of Wars/Halo/Mario games can wait, they already got enough money out of you, play the previous episodes instead.

I love(d) Twin Peaks, I really do.
Even if I discovered it quite late.
It launched a whole genre of crazy drama-thrillers-fantasy shows without which we wouldn't have gotten other drama/mystery/character-driven shows like Lost, Fringe and many more these recent years!

This, below, is easily the most memorable and my all-time favorite scene from the entire show.
The quiet before the storm of things to come later on the show. And it so easily distinguishes Cooper from your usual other main characters.

He was a damn fine character...

He was quite young there, the earliest "film" featuring Nicolas Cage in Best of Times, he was (only) 17 in this.

And pretty amazing work from the fans there!

Even if you never heard of this "Pingu", it still is a pretty amazing work. (and what's not to get? "stop motion penguins remaking the story from the thing")

Comic book artist Cliff Chiang revealed on Project Rooftop he had been working on a manga/anime-inspired take on the Justice League...

Just imagine what it could have been...

This entire project ended up getting us the Super Young Team which was a team of characters inspired by the DCU's Great Ten and American Superheroes (pictured above).

But at some point, behind the scenes, it was gonna be more literal, a team of young Japanese heroes directly inspired by the Justice League itself.

All of these heroes would have been modeled after cult classic Japanese proprieties.
Cliff Chiang tells how it almost was green-light...

Man..it could have been so awesome! Since there's a lack of Elseworlds tales nowadays, I would have loved to see DC launch a spinoff line like Marvel's Mangaverse!

One of all-time favorite classics.
Honestly? I think I saw this over 10 times when I was a kid. Every summer was the occasion to rewatch this classic flick at some point or another.

I always liked Jerry Lewis.
But this scene from Pardners (1956) is easily one of finest and most engraved scenes I have totally memorized and burned onto my brain forever!

Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis might not have been the best of pals behind the camera (yes, yes, a well known fact, thank you), but their chemistry on screen was perfect!

He sure changed quite a bit since then, but you can already sort of guess how's he gonna be like/how his humor's gonna evolve.

While for some months (mostly, around summer) it was quite difficult to pick something good due to a lack of (good) deviations others were harder to decide what to use above, simply choice-wise (too many things to pick from, I couldn't just make up my mind).

Finally went with variety in characters (and ending the year)

MR The Castle of Cagliostro

Let's start off this year with a whole new review!
This time I would like to offer you yet another entry in my long running Studio Ghibli Marathon.

This yet another "Ghibli-esque" movie from the pre-Studio Ghibli era. Taking you this time in the late 70s...

Movie: Lupin The III: Castle of Cagliostro also simply known as The Castle of Cagliostro
Directed by Hayao Miyazaki
Release date 1979
Genre Anime/adventure
Country Japan

Castle of Cagliostro is one of the earliest features around Lupin III, it is actually Lupin's 2nd movie adaptation.
Released only a mere year after the first one, The Secret of Mamo.
It was co-written and directed by Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazaki and originally one of his biggest projects to date.

Lupin 3 was at first a manga created by Monkey Punch (pen name of the mangaka Kazuhiko Katō).
It is about this international thief called Arsène Lupin The Third who is, yes, the grandson of the fictional character created by Maurice Leblanc.
Due to copyright issues and trademarks, Lupin has been forced to go under various other names depending on the translations and years they've been released.
Depending on the movie/TV series you'll see you might find him under the names: Rupan III (recent materials), Edgar (like most of the French releases, like mine picture above), Wolf or even Vidocq IV (true enough)!
For the sake of simplicity, I'll just use Lupin, ok?

In his adventures Lupin III is often accompanied by other thieves and criminals-for-hire and finds himself in very dangerous and often random situations.

Meet our heroes!

This second film takes off as our main character is pulling off a job in a casino in Monaco.

Lupin II and his acolyte Daisuke Jigen, a mercenary, barely make it outside the premises...
As our heroes escape in their famous Fiat 500, Lupin notices they actually stole fake money that has been spreading all over the world since a dozen of years or so...

Lupin convinces Jigen to attack the problem at its source and go after the people that have been spreading this fake money around.
Their journey takes them to (the fictional) Cagliostro, somewhere in mid-Europe.

But as soon as they reach their destination, trouble follows them quickly and they find themselves having to protect a girl from being kidnapped....

You'll never find a more well-mannered Lupin anywhere else!

Long story short, Lupin ends up having to rescure this princess, Clarisse, from the clutches of the evil Count of Cagliostro.
They find themselves in peril against the overwhelming forces of the Count's elite assassins, so Lupin call in some exterior help. The ronin Goemon Ishikawa XIII is quick to answer to his friend's.
And the head of an Interpol anti-Lupin task force, Inspector Koichi Zenigata finds the steps of Lupin leading him into the castle as well.
Meanwhile, international criminal Fujiko Minewas already way ahead of everyone else on the quest for the hidden treasure the Castle of Cagliostro hides beneath its underground...

As you might get from this crazy plot, it sort of goes everywhere but stays pretty focuses at the same time.

This movie's a fun adventure with lots of twists and turns around each corner.
Miyazaki based the movie around several Arsène Lupin stories actually. The movie uses some plot elements and alludes to La Comtesse de Cagliostro an original Lupin story from Leblanc, as well as taking some inspiration from La Justice d'Arsène Lupin by Boileau-Narcejac (mostly the forged money aspect, which concerned fake Francs during a WW1 era Germany in the original) and Maurice Leblanc's The Green-eyed Lady.

Aesthetically though it's totally a Hayao Miyazaki movie.
The tone of the movie makes it stand out amongst the various other Lupin 3 productions. From using Miyazaki-esque backgrounds and settings (the nature, the colorful realistic country, the castle..) to the plot itself.
As such, it features a much simpler and gentler Lupin & co. Even keeping Jigen aside I presume is a way of having less of the usual gun ho action on screen (and Goemon's even less present, barely making an appearance for fans simply). Though I must say Zenigata's perfectly in-character.
Also this is probably the movie were Miyazaki's influences can best be seen represented in the animation, particularly the 1952 classic French animated movie The King and the Bird (Le Roi et l'oiseau) from which Cagliostro takes a lot of cues from the castle's design to various designs, shots and animations.

Finally a note for the musical aspect.
The music here was composed by series regular Yuji Ohno, which perfectly captured the movie's tone and atmosphere in sound. The score is simply epic, fitting for such a crazy adventures featuring lots of chasing around and action, as well as some deeper emotions and more serious scenes too.

Overall, a fantastic movie!
Fans of animation, Ghibli, Lupin III or simply adventure films, don't miss this one out!

This Toho production helmed by Miyazaki at the top is one of the classic film features from the master of animation I can't recommend enough!
It can also work as a great introduction to the crazy universe of Lupin II (even if you'll call him Wolf, Edgar or Rupin III!).

A must watch, fun for all ages!

Anime NEWS! Ghibli's next flick

Studio Ghibli's next movie Kokuriko-zaka Kara (which means From Kokuriko Hill) will finally see the day outside Japan!

It seems that France will be amongst the first to get a release under the title La colline aux coquelicot, which is pretty far from the English more literal translated title From up on Poppy Hill.
The movie will get a localized theatrical release on January 11 and a DVD/Bluray home release shortly after.

Which is great, I'll be able to get it sooner than expected, no doubt a whole lot quicker than the US will have it on their theaters. When did you guys get Arrietty? Not long ago and only on theaters for now, right? Disney sure is taking its sweet time to give the movies over there...

Anyways, there's a new trailer for the occasion, with French subtitles only, sorry!

Looking sweet so far! Hope this can redeem Gorō Miyazaki in the eyes of the fans.
