With the recent upcoming reboot from DC coming up, I thought it would be fun to have a look back at something similar.
DC is trying to rejuvenate and clear off some years of confusing continuity, heh?
Back in the early 2000s, when Marvel's Ultimate Universe line was getting a lot of attention and success, Wizard Magazine thought about doing the same for DC Comics.
So they had some artists re-imagine the more popular DC characters, invent new modern backgrounds for them and redesign their costumes.
(blog post inspired by a recent scans-daily post) So, let's have a look at these redesigns.
"What if...." instead of rebooting, DC created a separated Ultimate line, with the following Wizard Magazine designs!?
Let's start classic, with only a glimpse of what the redesigned "Ultimate Justice League" could have looked like.
With these "minimal redesigns", we are able to recognize our heroes in only one glance, yet see some of the most visible changes immediately.
It's a great group shot, could have been easily a cover for a Ultimate Justice League#1 book.
Though as you can see some strange things can already been seen, like this monkey/chibified creature on the left. (warning! it's the Martian Manhunter!)
Let's have a look at our heroes, shall we?
Pretty fun Ultimate Flash design.
Different, obiously. But not that far.
It's the Wally West!Flash version.
I like it, and I'm guessing if an Ultimate line was actually made, we could had such design be used actually.
Ultimate Green Lantern, the John Stewart!Green Lantern, always a fan favorite since his JLU cartoon days.
Simple, not that far actually. Taking some of its cues directly from Bruce Timm/Paul Dini's cartoon series.
Sinestro is also getting a light facelift, though it's not as clear as the Flash above.
The Man of Steel himself now.
Actually kinda close to Superman: Earth One redesign (DC's own Ultimate line launched this year) or Jim Lee's redesign for September.
Like most Superman redesign, one of the first things it does is getting rid of his red pants as everyone tends to do.
The Kingdom S-shield logo, nice touch!
All in all, exactly what I'd imagine a regular Ultimate Superman looking like.
(not the main regular Superman's new costume! the Ultimate one!)
Ultimate Wonder Woman!
Kind of a hybrid Amazon grab/WW bikini mix.
Am I the only one getting a Xena vibe from this?
Much better than both recent Jim Lee redesigns. (DCU Online/reboot)
The Batman!
Not that far from what we got in the Arkham Asylum games! Minus the yellow logo of course.
Fun fact: They decided to base Gordon on Morgan Freeman..kinda like how the Ultimate Marvel universe uses Samuel L. Jackson as model for Nick Fury (and then used in the actual movies). Years before Morgan Freeman was actually casted (as Lucius Fox) in Batman Begins!
And here's the whole Ultimate JLA!
We can get a better (and only clear) look at the remaining members. Ultimate Atom (a girl!) and Ultimate Martian Manhunter!
I...I'm not a fan of this look for J'onn...ugh...too much E.T.... Not enough "Manhunter". Could you imagine him superhero-ing around? Battling villains?
Is he still a shapeshifter? Just a mind reader? The tech guy?? (Snapper's role in JL/Young Justice comics?)
And finally, to close this thread. Here's the Ultimate Teen Titans!
Probably improvised, unlike the work provided by various for each of the characters above in the JL roster.
Anyway, Cyborg looks exactly how I'd imagine in looking like in such line.
Raven is...nice :'3
Aqualad, Aquaman? Anyway, decent.
Tim Drake (?) Robin looks cool. Sort of similar to both the current Red Robin or Jason Todd!Red Hood.
Donna Troy is a bit slutty... Not a fan... Ripping off Wanda! The Scarlet Witch?
And Roy/Arsenal/Arrow/Speedy. Pretty close to what Green Arrow actually looked like in Smallville!
And that's it for the day~
