Did you know we almost got a vastly different Assassin's Creed franchise?
It was back in 2004.
Simultaneously in development alongside Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones (read my review here!) which would see its release in 2005.
That third episode would actually end up in what you might call the inspiration for the scifi aspect of the Assassin’s Creed series, in a space not unlike the Animus.
While what we got in 2007 was an open world-action/adventure parkour-oriented stealth scifi-historical series, we almost got something closer to the Prince of Persia series which inspired it.
A more platformer/brawler focused Assassin's Creed.
Let's check it out!
Originally pitched at Ubisoft as "a medieval hitman with a mysterious past", Altaïr was the main protagonist from the go.
Though would it have featured Desmond - aka the future/scifi aspect? I doubt so...
The look was narrowed down pretty quickly, early on the project.
This proto-Assassin’s Creed wouldn't have been that far off.
Altough...
These following are the first concepts thrown on paper of what would become the AC series.
Check out how the "gameplay" was being alluded in these concept arts from the very first meeting.
The concealed weapon also alluded here and there.
The series was even imagined in the same universe as PoP early on.
As you can see in this following pic, with Altair rescuing a boy on horseback.
It is actually our assassin rescuing the Prince of Persia as a boy, like a PoP spin-off.
They even thought about making our protagonist a female- which would have been neat, if you ask me.
These artworks were drawn by artist Khai Nguyen, and they're all from 2004!
What could have been - right?
(note: I actually adore the AC series as it is... though one can wonder...)
