CBR Adventure Time Vol. 5

You know what time it is?

It's time to review another Adventure Time book, is what it is!

Comic title: Adventure Time: Volume 5
Art by Braden Lamb & Shelli Paroline
Written by Ryan North

Published by Boom! Studios imprint KaBOOM!
From 2014
Lineup Adventure Time series
Format: Trade Paperback collecting Adventure Time #20-24.

I can't believe there's already been 5 trade paperbacks of the Adventure Time comic book companion series. As well as many manga-sized graphic novels, just as many spinoff standalone comics, not counting the video games, etc.

No really, it's quite impressive, and proof of the success of Pendleton Ward's epic hilarious scifi/fantay cartoon.

The comic's always been in great hands. Penned by the equally talented indie writer Ryan North, who was able to really capture the essence of the show on paper as well as give it a lot of personality. And hilarious commentary notes at the bottom of the pages, which I always love.

The main series is currently drawn by the duo of Shelli Paroline and Braden Lamb, and it really recaptures the look of the cartoon.

Volume 5 collects issues #20-24.

This new volume opens with another self-contained standalone story.

This story is entirely told from a first person perspective for a little birthday surprise at the end!

The Ice King wanted to see what's it like to be big, so he used mind control power to take over one of the Gumball Guardians. Only, he lost control of the giant! And now it's wrecking havoc in the land of Ooo!

Oh, and we get a look at the legendary "Adventure Tome"... which is just a book Finn and Jake made containing a list of great places for adventuring, cool enemies to face and other cool peeps to hang out with. Oh, and a few "deadly" fighting moves.

This is really just a fun epilogue to the previous story arc, really.

Next up is the main tale of this new volume!

The Candy Kingdom is infested with a creepy crawling mass of pink gum, forcing itself inside the various inhabitants in town! It was even able to take over Finn and Jake! They quickly fell, and soon the entire Kingdom finds itself covered with the stuff!

We learn this is yet another attempt of Princess Bubblegum to create life! But her experiment soon escaped her control! She finds herself stuck inside her Science Prison. Good thing she was handing out with Marceline who can help her out of there with her own powers. There only hope might just be PB's previous creation... Lemongrab!

This one was a fun story where PB and Marcie get to play the heroes for a change. There's a lot of great scenes in this story. I really loved the bit where PB was trying to narrate her own flashback, but Marceline kept messing up her narration! There also was a lot of great weird hints at PB's true dark nature, I loved it!

Finally we have a cover gallery containing the various alternate covers made for these issues, featuring various artists recurring and new, such as Mike Holmes, T. Fabert, Scott Maynard, Wes Craig, Emily Partridge, Ryo Nishiguchi, Tess Stone, Bryan Turner, Eva Cabrera and many more!

As always, like all the previous main Adventure Time releases the only thing missing from this release are the missing short backup stories (unlike BOOM Studios' other publications), so you'll have to get the later short story compilation to get those...

Overall, this was another solid volume of the Adventure Time comic!

It's always a great fun read. I always Highly Recommend this book because it's just as good as the show! It has some terrific great artwork with great humor. It not only manages to always keep the heart of the show intact but it always plays with the comic book medium to do its own thing.

Like the previous collection it's both available as this softcover collection pictured above and a more "deluxe" hardcover reprint called the "Mathematical Edition".

I give it:
    2,5 / 3 Snoopies!
