#DeletedScenes - That Sandman movie we never got

So it appears it's official.

David S. Goyer will be producing and writing the film adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Sandman (what?? NOOOOOOOooooo! not this hack again! why is Warner Bros having him do every single DC film??) which Robin I mean Joseph Gordon-Levitt will direct and star as the eponymous Morpheus.

Yikes.

Did you know for a very long time the film almost happened back in the mid-1990s, pitched by Gaiman himself to the studios with some help from writer/artist Jill Thompson who already had some connections thanks to her work on stage, film and TV....?

Thompson having worked on the Sandman series long before successfully launching her own Scary Godmother series.

Here are some illustrations produced in order to explain and sell the Sandman to Warner Bros.

All done in gorgeous watercolor, they really allow us to imagine what a Sandman movie might have looked like.

It seems the film would have dealt with the original first story arc of the book, yet featuring in some form or another several key characters from later comics frum Dream's sister Death to the Corinthian and many more!

I can almost see the narrative taking shape in my mind!

Jill Thompson went on working on several Sandman-related spin-off projects such as The Little Endless and The Dead Boy Detectives.

And as far as he's concerned, Gaiman always wanted the ex-Monthy Python and fantastic film director on his own right Terry Gilliam direct the adaptation. Like he said himself*

Now that would have been amazing and perfectly fitting!

Sigh....

Hollywood...
