What is going on with Jason Reitman 's upcoming GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE? Well... This apparently:
Why do I feel like this was partially caused by the pandemic's current lockdown? Silly random CGi-filled scene. Probably trying to cute it up following the reception of stuff like Baby Yoda and whatnot. It didn't require much cast nor crew present to shoot this kind of scene.
Wait and see....!
Also, Paul Rudd! I'm pretty much watching this for Paul Rudd.
Alright! Things are looking up.. maybe... let's be optimistic about this whole thing.
Jason Reitman's Ghostbusters is finally revealed to be titled Ghostbusters: Afterlife! And this new trailer does a 180 on the 2016 Answer the Call Ghostbusters reboot/remake... it presents itself as a distant standalone new idea with very little retreating the past/nostalgia, and the tone shows very little to no comedy.
I personally half-enjoyed Answer the Call. I loved the cast, but felt the direction a bit poor and didn't enjoy parts of the plot. And that film first showed itself in a nostalgia-filled first trailer even presenting itself as a direct continuation of the original ("30 years ago..").
Now we have this stranger soft-reboot thing...!
I like the visuals. And Jason Reitman's a talented director. Plus they got me at Paul Rudd, let's be honest. Not sure I dig the kid film approach, way too much Stranger Things vibe.
I guess the next trailer will actually rely more on nostalgia and show the entire returning original cast...
But color me optimistic about this whole thing so far.
Wait...!!! WHAT!! WHAT!?!?? What is this!?! A new Ghostbusters film!!!??
Not a sequel to the recent reboot! Not a proper Ghostbusters 3! But instead another attempt to reboot the franchise, this time it's closer to a "soft reboot", a modern continuation of the original films, with a brand new cast, only taking into account the originals.
I still say the Ghostbusters 2016 film had a great cast, but a poor choice of a director for such a unique mix of horror, fantasy and comedy. The actress were fantastic in my eyes. But making it a reboot trapped the film into basically remaking the original first film to the point.
I have big hopes for Jason Reitman's film. Afterall, he's the son of the original director. Let's hope his cast will be a nice mix of unknown new faces (men and women alike) as well as some older familiar ones...
