#RIP Isao Takahata

Today is a sad day indeed...
One of my all-time favorite animated films directors and animator, Isao Takahata, has passed away.
Isao Takahata was one of the co-founders of one of the best animation studios out there, Studio Ghibli. And as a director he was directly responsible for so many great influential films, such as Grave of the Fireflies.
He passed away today at the age of 82.
He began his career in animation back in 1959 when he joined Toei Animation. It was at Toei that he met legend Hayao Miyazaki, with whom he worked with for many years before founding Studio Ghibli.
At Studio Ghibli he has worked on many films, his credits include directing but also producing and writing their many films.

Most of his films are classics of mine, specially his groundbreaking film Grave of the Fireflies, but also Only Yesterday, Pom Poko, My Neighbors the Yamadas, and more recently The Tale of Princess Kaguya (which was nominated for an Academy Award, but didn’t end up winning  it against Big Hero 6...).
More recently there were talks of him working on one last feature film, but also a lot of health issues this past year, due to his heart condition....

Today is a sad day indeed... Please rewatch one of his classics this week, in his memory.

#AnimeNEWS Mary and the Witch’s Flower

Studio Ghibli might not be making any new films, but some long-time Ghibli veterans have launched their own animation studio, Studio Ponoc, and they will be releasing their first film next summer: Mary and the Witch’s Flower.

Check this out:

This certainly has a very distinct Ghibli-esque tone and stylistic look. I hope it's good!!

#Animation NEWS! The Red Turtle trailer

Studio Ghibli's not dead! Well, sort of...

The Red Turtle will be a French-Japanese co-production between Wild Bunch studios and Studio Ghibli, a story with no dialogue directed by Michaël Dudok de Wit. Check out this gorgeous trailer:

This looks absolutely stunning! I love the french comics "Bande Dessinée" look they're going for, the art direction is just gorgeous! And the atmosphere is very Ghibli-esque!

#Design - Zelda BS & Itchy & Scratchy custom cover art

Please! Do not ask for these! This was a personal job, not outsourcing the work to other people. If you want me to work out something for you, I will do so for money only.

I noticed I had 4 empty Megadrive/Sega Genesis game cases lying around. So I decided to play with my photoshop skills and work on a few "fake" mockup cover inserts just for fun.

Since the Sonic 4 games are simply digital titles, I decided to make a fake game case for the good ol' collection display.

I just loved how dino-tastic and childhood dreams-fulfilling Jurassic World was. I mean, that sequence with the raptors alone...! Also I always loved all those good old JP games, most of them were in fact pretty good all things considered. I'm just sad there wasn't a new game released on time for JW.. (yeah, we all know about the scrapped game) So just to have fun I mad a fake Jurassic World MD game box.

I really dislike the European/American cover of Empire of Steel/Steel Empire. The game completely loses the influence from the Studio Ghibli film Laputa! So I made a better custom one for my copy of the game.

I'm not allowing the comments below to avoid the spam I usually get on these.

#Anime NEWS! - John Lasseter honors Hayao Miyazaki at the 2014 Governors Awards

Check out John Lasseter's speech at the 2014 Governors Awards in the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood. A speech he made for the Honorary Award Hayao Miyazaki received there:

And Miyazaki's own speech as well:

Good stuff. I'll miss his big feature-length films, even though he will continue making some shorts for the Ghibli museum.

#Anime NEWS! Studio Ghibli goes back to TV

Apart from earlier television work by Miyazaki and Takahata, the actual proper Studio Ghibli has never truly produced an on-oing anime TV series. Until now.

Here's the first footage from Ronia The Robber's Daughter, an upcoming show where the Studio will experiment playing with CGi for a change:

This will be Goro Miyazaki's first TV series.

I dunno for you.. not entirely sold on the art style. The CGi does make it seem a bit lazy around the edges and not that dynamic. Particularly that hand animation at the end.

Let's just say, it looks like a video game (cut scene) more than a proper anime!

#Anime NEWS! The Next Ghibli Film

And here's the trailer for the next upcoming Studio Ghibli film, When Marnie Was There.

It looks fairly nice, if a bit generic to be honest.

This one will be directed by Arrietty's director and long time key animator at Ghibli, Hiromasa Yonebayashi and is based on the book by Joan G. Robinson. Following the retirement of both Takahata and Miyasaki.

#Anime NEWS! And the 2014 Ghibli movie will be...

First up a little clip of Kaze Tachinu ("The Wind Rises"), the upcoming new Miyazaki animated film out in most places around the world this January.

In French subtitled only (sorry~)

Le Vent se Lève - Extrait : leur première... par FRFilmFactory

The animation looks amazing as always^^

And some news regarding the new following movie.

The new 2014 Studio Ghibli feature is titled Omoide no Marnie ("Marnie's memories").

It is based on one of Miyazaki's own favorite classic books, When Marnie Was There by Joan G. Robinson.

It will be directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi (Arrietty), marking his second feature film, so I guess that means he's officially taking over Miyazaki and Takahata?

And here's a link to the official website: http://www.marnie.jp/

#Anime NEWS! Isao Takahata new film

Here's another better, longer and proper look at Studio Ghibli's upcoming film, The Tale of Princess Kaguya based on the classic Japanese legend The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter.

And yes, this is how the film will look like.

They're going for an old paintbrush-style look for this feature. Personally I find it gorgeous!

His first film in 14 years, can't wait!!

#Anime NEWS! And the next Ghibli movie is...

And here's a trailer of the upcoming new Studio Ghibli film!

This one will be directed by Isao Takahata this time, his first new film in 14 years! (last one being the Yamadas!)

The film titled Princess Kaguya in the West will be hand-drawn and go for a more traditional ink brush style.

And it looks absolutely gorgeous so far!

Based on the classic Japanese tale The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, it follows the Princess Kaguya, found as a baby in a glowing bamboo stalk.

And here's another preview which shows that either the film changed art style in production or that the look will depend on the tone of the various scenes:
