#DeletedScenes - Plastic Man: The Animated Series

Before he got resurrected in animation as part of DC Nation, it was originally planned by Warner Bros. that Plastic Man would get his very own animated series.

This was back when they were trying to make shows outta various DC characters, fresh of the Static Shock animated series back in the early 2000s.

While many of you out there have probably already seen the scrapped pilot for the series on youtube, I propose you to see some preliminary work as well as some concept arts in today's DeletedScenes blog post!

The series was original proposed by two guys from DC Comics Stephen DeStephan and Andy Suriano in 2006.

They wanted to make an animated series for Plastic Man which would be as cartoony as most shows that offered Cartoon Network back then, which would perfectly suit a sort of Golden Age/Silver Age-style inspired Plas'.

With the help from some folks from "Ren and Stimpy", it was looking great so far...
But sadly, it never come to be...

Here 's some early sketches which served to visualize the way our hero would animated:

It looks like the series would have been greatly inspired by Kyle Baker's run on Plastic Man - and for a good reason!
Baker actually worked on the concepts (some of the following drawings on this page might have actually been drawn by him)  and was pretty involved in the pilot.

Here's more concept arts of Woozy Winks, the chief and more!

And some early storyboards:

Sadly Cartoon Network never picked it up...
Why, oh, why? I can't really find any answers besides CN wanted to air mostly their own original owned shows. (unlike the later 2000s Cartoon Network which would hair tons of outsourced work such as animes, or today's 2010s Cartoon Network which mostly airs boring kiddie live series...)

Now, enough talk, here's the entire leaked pilot, which they didn't even bother to air!

The legacy of this canceled series would leave on!
Tom Kenny would continue to voice Plastic Man in every incarnation past this one! (on The Brave & The Bold,...)
Speaking of TB&TB, most work from the animated series would be reused in Plas' appearances over there. His abilities, design, colors,..
And on the current DC Nation cartoon block, this series has finally been resurrected, albeit in the form of smaller shorts (2 min. episodes) !

Plastic Man is dead, long live Plas'!!~
