MR Bender's Game

"Oh, Lord, I'm half horse and half naked!"

The future is here, with all these Futurama-related reviews!

Movie: Futurama: Bender's Game
Directed by Dwayne Carey-Hill
Release date 2008
Genre Animated science-fiction/fantasy/comedy
Country USA

Here's the third Futurama movie since the cancellation of the show (and long before its return!

This one was released in November 2008.
This one attempts to replace the usual scifi setting for a fantasy Dungeons and Dragons-inspired one.

Gary Gygax, the creator of D&D died during its production, so they dedicated this film to him (and he does have a little cameo they kept in it).

Mom has made fuel super expensive with her monopole on Earth.
After Leela enters a demolition derby contest because someone insulted her, the Planet Express crew is now left with only one solution - finding an alternate solution!

Meanwhile Bender finds the Professor's nephew Cubert and Dwight playing Dungeons & Dragons with some friends.
Bender gets addicted to the game and can't let go of his game character Titanius Anglesmith, fancy man of Cornwood!

It all comes down clashing together when the crew finds Nibblonians (like Nibbler! remember him?) working a Dark Matter mine for mom and due to an accident Bender gets them thrown into his very own fantasy land... in his mind!

This movie tries something very different from the others.

The new different setting makes the entire movie feel more like a special episode than a feature length movie maybe.
But it's still fun to see the writers play with these well established characters under new directions.

It's definitively the nerdier one so far.
This one has lots of Dungeons & Dragons and Lord of the Rings references.

As usual, the cast still is at the top of their game.
The music is pretty good as usual.
The opening intro this time parodies the 1968 Yellow Submarine film! Which was as unexpected and random as the film itself. (I liked it though)

Overall, another pretty good movie.
It was.. good.
If the first one was more like an introduction to its characters and the second one played with the type of themes and tropes the show explored, this one show the more geek side of Futurama.

Perhaps not as great as the show has been on some occasions but at least it feels more like an episode than the previous ones.
And, hey, more Futurama is always better than nothing.

Futurama still is one of the more nerdy shows out there. I always liked how the show doesn't just rely on pop culture jokes and throwaway celebrity guest stars as other adult oriented cartoon series.

The pace was perhaps a bit slow this time.
And it lacked a bit of Futurama's usual political commentary.

Still, it might interest more newcomers.
Even if the story felt a bit simpler this time.

I give it:
2 / 3 Felixes!
