#Blog The MEGA #GOSEGA Sega celebration post of 2021

So I meant to work on this post this entire year, and finally end up writing this the last two days of 2021..  But at least it's still 2021 so it's technically still the year-long celebration of Sega's 60 years of activity. Aka #GOSEGA

This year I didn't bother (yet) with the new consoles. I didn't bother as much with current game releases, outside of compilation collections. I mostly bought and played on old Sega systems. I played a ton of Sega Master System and Mega Drive/Genesis. I had my Saturn sessions here and there. And I kept going back to the Dreamcast whenever.

We started the year getting a brand new Sega system, the Astro City Mini

And while Sonic made his absence ominous this year, aside from teasers, a trailer for a new film and a port of an older title, we got to see the return of famous Sega Classic icons! Such as a new Alex Kidd, 30 years in the making! And we got a new Streets of Rage as well as a remake of Panzer Dragoon! Several new Monster World spiritual successors and updates, like Aisha in Monster World!

I followed the homebrew scene closer to keep an eye on new Mega Drive and Master System titles. (More on that BELOW!)

I also finally grabbed a super-cute Sega Mega Drive Mini. I was able to find locally all editions of the Game Gear Mini.

But I knew this year I had to finally get my hands on all remaining Sega Systems. You see, I started with the Sega Mega Drive (1, then 2), got a Master System and a Saturn later, was here for the launch of Dreamcast. Game Gear, Nomad, heck I even got a Sega Pico at some point. But I noticed I was only missing a few odd iterations (only counting official Sega-licensed systems and partners such as Atari Games and TecToy).

So I planned and searched for some remaining odd consoles throughout the year. I ordered a Master System 3 from some ebay/Mercado Libre equivalent.

And slowly, piece by piece, I completed the collection.

Anyways, enough words. Here's some pictures taken from the collection (others can be found on the previous blog posts):

This here is my second Game Gear, a modern USB-C-powered Game Gear by RetroSix. I really love it aside from a few issues booting a couple of games, so it has become my default go-to Game Gear to test and play games. Plus I dig the custom Knuckles red shell.

The Sega Genesis 3!!! An obscure NTSC-only re-release.

Mighty digs its compact rounder shell.

The Atari Games Mega Drive Flashback, like their own Atari Flashback systems. This one plays actual cartridges as well as the plug-and-play titles.

Smaller than the real deal.

I dig the wireless pads, tho.

The Japanese-only Mega Jet. In short, a Game Gear without screen, to use on airplane travels, apparently. Works fine without the plane :P

The Multi-Mega. a Sega-CD/Genesis (Mega Drive) combo. Works as a portable CD-drive as well!

Here you can see how small it is compared to a Mega Drive 1 and Sega CD 1.

And here it is next to a Mega Drive 2, Sega CD 2 and 32x.

My first original Game Gear, which had to be repaired once (sound and screen issues), but now works fine. Although it still eats batteries way too fast..

And my Sega Nomad (aka the Sega Venus! I love the planet codenames.. Speaking of, the Game Gear is the Sega Mercury if you want to know.)

I still have my complete-in-box Sega SG-1000. My SG-1000 mark 2 without a box. And I use my Sega Mark III (Japanese Master System) to play the older SG-1000 titles.

Mark III/Japanese Master System.

Original Sega Master System.

Sega Master System 2!
Sega Master System 3??!! (The TecToy plug-in-play one!)
Mega Drive tower 1.
Mega Drive tower 2.
SEGAAAA SAAATUUUURN!!
My lil Sega Dreamcast.
The aforementioned Astro City Mini. Kind of the equivalent of the unmade Sega Jupiter in favor of the Sega Saturn (a cart-based 32-bit system scrapped early on).

And the edutainment's longest running console, the Sega Pico.

Where does that leave me for consoles? I'^m actually quite pleased with my console collection, Sega or not. If you checked some earlier posts I already posted stuff about the Neo Geo and others. But I would love to see a fanmade take of the prototype Sega Neptune (Mega Drive+32x combo). And there's some great fanmade portable Dreamcast available nowadays.

As for games? If I played a couple of recent Switch and PS4 titles this year (often a few months late), I mostly kept to homebrew titles. My Dreamcast collection grew steadily this year. But I followed a lot of Mega Drive and Master System projetcs. While I am still waiting for said Master System titles, here's a view of some of my "modern" recent retro titles!

I also finally started looking into custom game cases. And decided to give all my orphan (Sega) cartridge titles a new home.

And that is it for my year of Sega celebration!

Can't wait to dig into some more obscure stuff for next year.

And remember, #GOSEGA!!!
